Hi Lily, Hi lily, Hi low. There will be a performance of The Vagina Monologues in Paducah, KY on March 12 at the 4 Rivers Center. I would like to cordially invite you and Jane to this performance. This would make my life complete. Some people say I remind them of you. Sincerely, Christina

The other day I was at a wymmyn’s music festival, which in and of itself was sort of strange because I’m not a wymmyn or a womyn or anything w-, I’m just a plain old man. Anyway I was weaving my way through the jungle of tofu booths and undeoderized piercing tents, avoiding an encoutner with the minotaur, when who should I run into by folk-pop songstress Fiona Apple. She was at the concession stand buying some tea and so I went up and said “Who do you think you are, Fiona Snapple?” Then we both had a laugh and for a second there I swear I forgot entirely about my penis.

Dear Lily,
My Aunt (Evelyn Trimmer) wanted me to pass a very specific message onto you. She “has been jotting it down and has pictures for 25 years”. She also wanted me to tell you that she’s writing a book called “The Housecracker”. If I could get an email response, I can send you her number. She wants you to call her.

Thanks,

I saw your show in NYC about 25 (?) years ago. And now I get to watch you on “West Wing.” You’ve always been great. I’m from Philadelphia and putting together a “show” for women living in a homeless shelter. Songs, monologues…wish you could be IN it. Do you have any ideas for good material? My goal is to lighten their load for an hour, create joy and laughter…inspire women with joy. I just checked your web site to be inspired myself. When are you coming back to the east coast?

I can’t imagine someone actually responds to this e-mail, but thought I’d give it a try.

And someone got me ‘Big business’ on DVD for valentines day, which is a staple of TV when you’re growing up on the UK yay! Thanks for making a northerner laugh so much!

Lily, I wanted to thank you sooo much for making “This Is A Recording” available on CD. I’ve been searching for it for so long, as my original LP is so worn out from years of use. It’s one of my favorite albums to listen to! And to those who have not listened to it, buy it now! You won’t be sorry.

Lily and web designer, this is a wonderful, hilarious website. I came on, looking for Lily’s address and stayed for an hour laughing so hard my cat headed for the kitchen, thinking something was wrong! Thanks for your great humor, the wisdom and the pretty face that we could make look silly. I laughed like a baby! I will always be your fan! You’re a treasure and so is Jane!

Some time ago, using my knowledge of your charachters, and some new material I had put together, I placed a piece describing amongst other things, a meeting of Tess, and Judith. It was a lengthy piece, but nonetheless humorous AND moving, in a way I had hoped you and Jane would like. I just wanted more than anything to make YOU laugh. God knows you’ve done your part to make ME laugh!!
I followed with a letter from my heart telling you about my childhood and how your humor was a large part of the reason why I did not give up. These two entries that I wrote, I am unable to find I think they are not here any more, yet something else I sent a long while back still is here. Does that mean that you read my Tess piece and the letter? Maybe it was bumped off by some of those scrolling ads. Maybe a site manager could let me know. I know youre busy. But you DID change my life, …and you ARE changing the whole world. One heart at a time.

Hi Lily, Some time ago you considered performing the manuscript version of my humorous feminist novel OY PIONEER! I have good news: the manuscript you read has been published by the University of Wisconsin Press in their Jewish fiction series. I have been doing public readings in Manhattan and audiences love the novel! Since I am certainly no performer, as I heard audiences laugh hysterically I thought of what a better job you could do. So, now that my work has been published by a renowned university press and it has live audiences’ seal of approval, would you reconsider it? The publisher’s description follows below.
Thank you and all best, Marleen Barr
Oy Pioneer!
A Novel
Marleen S. Barr

Library of American Fiction

Terrace Books, a trade imprint of the University of Wisconsin Press

An irreverent romp through the groves of academe with a fiercely feministóand husband-huntingóliterary theorist
What would happen if a feminist Jewish wit and scholar invaded David Lodge’s territory? Marleen S. Barr, herself a pioneer in the feminist criticism of science fiction, provides a giddily entertaining answer in this feisty novel. Oy Pioneer! follows professor Sondra Lear as she makes her inimitable way through a world of learningóat times fantastic, at times all too familiar, often hilarious, and always compulsively interesting.

As if Mel Brooks and Erica Jong had joined forces to recreate Sex and the City for the intellectual set, the story is a heady mix of Jewish humor, feminist insight, and academic satire. Lear is a tenured radical and a wildly ambitious intellectual, but is subject nonetheless to the husband-hunting imperatives of her Jewish mother. Her adventures expand narrative parameters according to Barr’s term “genre fission.”

Mixing elements of science fiction, fantasy, ethnic comedy, satire, and authentic experience of academic life, Oy Pioneer! is uncommonly funóa Jewish feminist scholar’s imaginative text boldly going where no academic satire has gone beforeóand bringing readers along for an exhilarating ride.

“The novel is clearly written, often witty, and moves quickly from scene to scene. It takes some familiar elements and gives them a new twist through a blend of genres. It should appeal to feminists, to academics, and to Jewish-American readers.” ó SFRA Review March 2004, Taylors, SC

“This frothy novel spoofs the unlikely combination of academia, feminism, Jewish mothers, Jewish humor, and Barbara Bush, among others.” ó Morton I. Teicher, founding dean of the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University , and Dean Emeritus, School of Social Work, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Marleen S. Barr is Scholar in Residence at The Hadassah Brandeis Institute, a feminist research institute located at Brandeis University. Her many works include Genre Fission and Feminist Fabulation and, as editor, Envisioning the Future and the science fiction issue of the journal PMLA.

Hi there. My name is Jill and I work at an elementary school in Texas. This week, the kids are working on a project called Flat Stanley. If you’re not familiar with the project, the kids design and decorate “Stanley” and send him to another town in care of a friend of family member. He is sent back w/ pictures and details from his trip. I think it would be neat to send one to someone famous and have it sent back for the kids. Please let me know if this is possible

Lily, This worked before several years ago when we wrote to ask you to perform in our town…and it worked! You wrote back! However, we weren’t in a place to follow through back then. Anyway, more recently we tried to go through your agent and also through the O’Shaughnessy staff to ask you to perform here in the Twin Cities for a fundraiser on behalf of several glbt/feminist organizations, but still no success. Would you (re-) consider coming? We would love to get you either this Spring or Fall to do a one-night appearance (goddess forbid we dream of two nights) at the O’Shaughnessy/St. Kate’s on behalf of Breathe In Sing Out Productions (www.breatheinsingout.org), Patrick’s Cabaret (www.patrickscabaret.org) and Amazon Bookstore, the oldest continuing feminist bookstore in the US (www.amazonbookstorecoop.com). All of our organizations have been struggling with the post-9/11 economy and are in debt and a one-night appearance by you would help us all out so much! Even though we can’t offer a guarantee, we know it would sell out! The O’Shaughnessy staff has also been supportive of this idea as well. Please think about it and, if you would be open to talking, contact me at the email attached to this message and keep up the great work. I love seeing you do your cameos on WW and I just saw I (Heart) Huckabees. It was great! – MK

Dear Lily and Jane,
I’m a senior from a small high school in WA, and I have to say that what really got me through this past year was having the privilage of working on pieces of “The Search…” for a theater independant study–I recently performed Trudy’s first two monologues for a sophomore honor’s english class, and the audience loved the text–Thank you for writing and performing such an amazing piece–I would not be the same actress with out your inspiration.
